ART THERAPY – FOR CHILDREN

I specialize in working with children who have learning or language needs, who are on the autism spectrum, or who experience anxiety. Together, we take the first therapeutic steps toward creating an environment of safety and trust.

My work begins by building this foundation of trust with your child. From there, my approach unfolds in three parts:

  • Focus on communication through play and art-making that requires interaction — activities that naturally encourage verbal and non-verbal exchange. This helps develop early communication skills and back-and-forth interaction. I use mediums like modeling clay, painting, drawing, collage, and puppets for this purpose.
  • Draw on imagination. I introduce children to artworks, stories, and scenarios, and together we imagine solutions or continue the story. I present new techniques or materials so they can interact with them in different ways, sparking new kinds of engagement.
  • Express emotions. This happens through the use of color, sculpture, and reading books about strong emotions. The goal is to help emotions surface and find expression.

Your child leads the sessions and becomes the active participant in their own development. My role is to guide them toward autonomy, cultivate a desire to share and imagine with others, and help them build a stronger connection with themselves.

Depending on each child’s needs and skills, I draw on a range of mediums. Clay and salt dough are often my starting point with a new client — they’re highly tactile, which helps build an easy rapport between therapist and child early on. Other mediums I use include stop-motion animation, collage, paint, video, photography, puppets, and water play. Each child has unique needs and skills, which we address through the art forms best suited to them.

Whatever medium we use, I always adapt it to the child and their needs in the moment.

Here are some examples from former clients:

This is a book created by a client who had ADHD, and who likened his school day to climbing a mountain. Through the drawing and planning of the book, he reflected on who could be a mountain guide for him at school, as well as what his yetis or mountain monsters were that made it hard to get through the day. He reflected on what he would need to tackle the mountain every day, and he shared the finished book with his classmates.

A client was struggling with anger and anxiety in class. We researched what happened in her brain when she felt anxious in class, and we learned about the Prefrontal Cortex and how it helped her to regulate emotions and make decisions. She designed a necklace with images of her brain and strategies of what she could do when she felt overwhelmed, as a reminder of the actions that she could take when she started to feel anxious.

With a client who had trouble structuring and ordering daily tasks in the classroom and with his homework, we created a stop motion animation video.  Through stop motion animation, he began to understand that every task has many steps, and that to accomplish a project he must go one step at a time.

This client was struggling with associating sounds and letters in English, and in constructing coherent sentences.  By creating an illustrated sound dictionary, he was able to connect sounds to letters and took time to research words that began with the same sound.  By creating silly sentence diagrams, he worked on learning and understanding the different parts of speech.
